7 types of employment in Germany
📎Vollzeitarbeitsvertrag
This is a classic full-time employment contract. Such a contract is drawn up for most full-time jobs (36-40 hours/week), regardless of profession.
It is the best for employees and gives full social protection🛡️
⠀
📎Teilzeitarbeitsvertrag
This is a PART-TIME employment option (fewer working hours than the previous one), but is not subject to Minijob restrictions.
For example, you work 5 hours a day on a five-day shift and you get €1,000 a month — that’s too much for Minijob, but it’s not full-time either.
⠀
📎There is also Halbtagsjob, “half-time work”, when the number of hours is less than the standard by two times or more.
⠀
📎Minijob is a part-time job with a maximum monthly salary of €520. “Mini-jobbers” have the same guarantees as regular employees: they are protected from dismissal, receive benefits, double holiday pay and are entitled to vacation.
⠀
📎Werkstudent
Employers prefer to employ STUDENTS under the special Werkstudent system. The differences there are mainly related to taxes and have little to do with the employee. A student who receives more than €520 will definitely be issued this way.
⠀
📎Freiberufler
These are freelancers who work under the self-employment system. This regime is suitable for those who belong to the so-called “free professions” (freie Berufe).
⠀
Official self-employment is registered at the local tax office and can serve as a basis for obtaining a work visa or residence permit, provided you prove that you have German clients (contracts, inquiries, portfolio). At the same time, it is not possible to receive more than 80% of the income from one client, and it is necessary to deduct payments to social funds independently and submit a tax return.
⠀
📎Gewerbe
This is another type of self-employment. Gewerbe includes any commercial activity — running a small business, selling services, and generally everything that is not a free profession, freie Berufe. This is the most common way of registering self-employment in Germany.
